(Heads up: This is a very long post with a lot of pictures!)
To celebrate the end of a long busy school year for Nate, we decided to go down to Moab for the weekend and visit Arches and Dead Horse Point. We went with 2 of our friends, who was also a friend of Nate's from school, so it was a nice celebration for them as well.
On Friday, I took off of work and got the car packed and ready to go so that when the boys were finished with their tests, Nate could come home and he and I could just jump in the car and go pick up our friends, Dan and Carrie. We went to lunch and then drove down to Moab and got there about 6:00 p.m. that night. Nate and I rented a tiny little cabin (or as Dan described it, a Tuff shed with a bed inside) and Dan and Carrie stayed in their tent at the same camp site. We then went into Arches and saw Balanced Rock and Double Arch. Both were very neat.
On Saturday morning, we woke up early and went back to Arches and tried to go to Fiery Furnace. We were told that the only way to go into the Fiery Furnace was to get a tour and those fill very fast. So we went first thing in the morning, but we were still about 5 minutes too late and the tour was full. At first we were dissappointed, but then they told us that we could just watch a short video and then get a hiking permit to enter that part of the park. So this is what we did and boy are we glad!! Not only was it cheaper, but we were able to go through the park and explore on our own. This was by far the most amazing part of the trip. We spent about 5 hours in the fiery furnace - there are so many different paths and routes to take and explore. You can easily spend a day or more in there. We have some incredible pictures taken from that site.
After the Fiery Furnace, we went and hiked to Landscape Arch. I guess you used to be able to walk right up to it, but in 1991, a chunk of the arch fell off and now you can't go right under it. It looks very fragile, very long, and very neat.
Later in the evening, we went to Windows and then to Delicate Arch. Arches really is an incredible place!!
Before we went back for the evening, we went to this giant sand dune and played on the hill for a little while.
On Sunday morning, we stopped by Dead Horse Point State Park on our way home. This canyon was amazing! The history behind Dead Horse Point is that there is this point of land that is separated from the main part of land by a narrow path about 30 yards wide. Old cowboys used to bring horses to that point and fence off the narrow path to make a sort of natural corral, the horses were surrounded on all sides by a several hundred foot drop. They would then break the horses and pick the best of the bunch and take those. They left the rest of the horses fenced in area at the point and they eventually died of thirst.
We had such a fun weekend and definitely want to go back someday..but boy am I sore!!!
Here are some of our favorite pictures from our weekend!
